The Biologically Inspired Materials, Processes, and Systems (BIMPS) conference chairs will choose the best student presentations of their conference. A cash prize, sponsored by an SPIE Fellow, will be given to the first, second, and third place winners.
The Craig F. Bohren Best Student Presentation Award is awarded in honor of Craig F. Bohren, who is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Meteorology at The Pennsylvania State University. An expert on atmospheric optics, his autobiographical paper available at https://doi.org/10.1117/1.3359439 will no doubt inspire many researchers, young and old alike.
To be eligible for the contest, you must:
- be a student without a doctoral degree (undergraduate, graduate, or PhD student)
- be the presenter of an accepted oral presentation in the Biologically Inspired Materials, Processes, and Systems (BIMPS) conference
- have conducted the majority of the work to be presented
- present your paper as scheduled at Smart Structures + Nondestructive Evaluation 2025 in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
Nomination and recognition:
All submitted applications will be eligible for the awards if they meet the above criteria. First, second, and third place award winners will be recognized onsite.

REVIEW PROCESS:
- All applicants will present as scheduled at SPIE Smart Structures + Nondestructive Evaluation
