The SPIE Biophotonics Summer School, formerly the Hven Biophotonics Graduate Summer School, was founded in 2003. The biennial school provides graduate-level biophotonics education for students and first-year postdoctoral researchers at the highest international level. Participants gather together for a packed week on the Island of Ven, a small island in the strait between Denmark and Sweden, to learn from renowned lecturers from all over the world, present their research in poster sessions, and foster important connections in this growing field. The result is a fully immersive and groundbreaking experience.
The school fee is $1,300 USD, covering meals and accommodation. Participants are responsible for this cost, which does not include transportation to the venue. Limited financial support may be available.
Application and Peer-review
- As part of the application process, applicants must submit a three-page summary of their research and results or planned research project.
- After the application deadline has expired, the organizers conduct a peer-review of the summaries and applicants are admitted based on the outcome of the review process.
- The criteria for the review are:
- i) relevance of work within biophotonics (completed work or planned work),
- ii) relevance to topics taught at current school, and
- iii) expected benefit from attending the school
